Persecution Rises: June 3- June 6 incidents

The following reports from field watchdogs (such as International Christian Concern, Aid to the Church in Need, and Christian Solidarity Worldwide) outline targeted actions against Christian communities from June 3-6th, 2026.

1. Mozambique: Assassination of a Catholic Bishop (June 6, 2026)

The Incident: Early in the morning on Saturday, June 6, Bishop Osório Citora Afonso was shot and killed at his episcopal residence in the port city of Quelimane. His body was discovered in a corridor of the residence with a gunshot wound to the chest.

The Context: While the government is investigating the exact circumstances, the assassination has sent shockwaves through the country. It occurs against a backdrop of intensifying Islamist insurgency in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, where Islamic State-affiliated jihadists have transitioned from attacking government outposts to actively trying to establish a caliphate, systematically burning down historical churches and targeting Christian leaders.

2. Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC): The Mbau Massacre (June 2, 2026)

The Incident: Militants from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an Islamic extremist group operating in the eastern DRC, launched a night raid on the village of Mbau, near Beni City. At least 24 Christian villagers were executed, including a local pastor and his wife.

The Context: This attack occurred just three days after another raid on the nearby village of Ngadi on May 30, where seven indigenous Christian Pygmies were woken up and executed to Islamic shouts. In less than a week, over 40 Christians in this specific corridor have been targeted and killed, triggering massive local protests over the failure of regional security and UN peacekeepers to protect vulnerable farming communities.

3. Central India: Social Boycotts and Violent Interruptions (Late May – June 1, 2026)

While physical martyrdom dominates headlines in Africa, institutional erasure is escalating in India's tribal belts:

The Attack (May 31): In the Sukma district of Chhattisgarh, a mob interrupted a Sunday morning house-church prayer gathering of roughly 70 believers. More than 25 Christians were physically assaulted, including the pastor and his pregnant wife, sending five people to the district hospital with severe injuries.

The Clean Water Blockade (On-Going): Simultaneously, in the neighboring Kanker district, more than 180 Christian tribal families have entered their second week of a strict community blockade. Local radical groups have cut off their access to village rivers and clean drinking water sources, barred them from harvesting forest products for food, and blocked them from state employment schemes in an overt attempt to force a Ghar Wapsi ("homecoming" re-conversion) back to Hinduism.

4. Cuba: Rapid Sentencing of Pastors' Children (June 2026 Update)

The Incident: Legal updates from human rights monitors in Havana highlight the ongoing detention of 16-year-old Jonathan David Muir Burgos, the son of an evangelical pastor. Arrested following localized social dissent, the state has formalize a charge of "sabotage"—which carries up to a 15-year prison sentence—frequently used by the regime to target the families of religious leaders who refuse to align their preaching with state rhetoric.

Prayer warriors keep lifting our brethren in all corners of the world!
